At 291 metres high, the Olympic Tower is Munich's tallest building. Construction work began in 1965 according to the plans of Munich architect Sebastian Rosenthal, and the 52,500-tonne tower was opened on 22 February 1968. The viewing platforms at a height of around 190 metres soon became a major attraction. Nowhere else in Munich offered such an impressive view of the surrounding countryside and mountains. The tower has been temporarily closed since 1 June 2024. During renovation work, the fire protection will be brought up to date and the two passenger lifts will also have to be replaced. The sprinkler and ventilation systems will also be replaced, as will the heating and water pipes. The tower will be open to all visitors again from 2026.
